DC theatre audiences are in for a treat next month, as the renowned one-woman international play, The Woman Who Would Be King, is set to hit the Millennium Stage at John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on August 4th, 2017 at 6pm. The show made it’s world premiere last year in Cape Town, South Africa and then had it’s U.S. début at the Smithsonian Museum of African Art in March 2017.
The Woman Who Would Be King, is a fictional one-woman play written and performed by globe-trotting Nigerian-American actress and producer, Esosa E, best known for her role in the international hit TV and web series An African City which has been dubbed “Africa’s Answer to Sex & the City.” This one woman play is inspired by the life of Hatshepsut and Esosa embodies eleven characters to bring to life her fascinating journey to the throne. Research into Egyptian history sees Hatshepsut regarded as one of the most successful Pharaohs, reigning longer than any other woman of an Egyptian dynasty. In this play, the audience will be able to step into the shoes of a woman who strategically mastered her adversities to emerge as the first female ruler of ancient Egypt.
Working back-and-forth between Africa and Los Angeles, Esosa E says she’s excited to finally showcase The Woman Who Would Be King in DC. “I’m very excited to bring my one woman show to the DMV area,” Esosa E. said, “Although I am from here, this year has afforded me several opportunities to share my work with the DC community for the first time. Hatshepsut’s story really resonates with me and I am honored to share it. She’s a woman who defied the traditions of her time, took power, and ruled peacefully for over twenty years. Right now our world needs more stories and examples of female leadership.”
